I doubt that many of us can watch 36 minutes of video, but if you do, you will see that Jimmy Carter was no saint when he went after Mo Udall for his religious views, even though Udall was a good man who criticized his own church for its racist views. Jimmy's moral compass was just as warped back in 1976 as it is now.

Very much so. It has a good deal of information including a powerful message at the very end which is not limited to secular folks. It isn't about Mormonism it is about "Romney's religion" and how it's inter-meshed with a long standing post-modern theocracy in this country in which he includes Jimmy Carter and his defeat of the more sensible and secular, yet Mormon himself, Mo Udall.

I didn't listen to the whole video, but I will say this: I was a bit apprehensive, given the title. The idea that perhaps some religions are more problematic than others when it comes to public service made me uncomfortable.

I believe a more appropriate title would have been Why Romney's Expression of Religion Matters.

In any event, this video really is worth watching.

In any event, this video really is worth watching.

It's not that some religion are problematic, it's that those religions happen to be the dominant ones in the political landscape. One can see that as being random. It's not necessarily the particular religious beliefs as but instead how that's transferred into political power and this public policy. Hence the comparison of two Mormons: Udall and Romney and their differences.

Yes, that becomes clearly evident.

Lately, religious expression has become less about personal expression and more about dictating morality.

This is a really good find, Gus. The subject needs to be discussed- really discussed, without the shrill canned insults.

Religion has and can play an important role in the public square. How we prevent religion from becoming a divisive force is one of the most important conversations we can have,

It is understood there will be differences of opinion- and that is not necessarily a bad thing (conversations about morality and moral choices keep morality at the for). Nevertheless, differences are not a zero sum game- they do not negate or reduce adversaries.

The ground rules ought to be clear- the government has no business in the bedrooms or homes of the nation- and the government has no business in the churches or framing religious doctrine.

If that message gets through, 90% of the polituical idiocy goes out the window- notwithstanding what the hard right or hard left say.
